(i) Concessional basic customs duty of 5% and (ii) complete exemption from excise duty, on machinery and equipment required for setting up of compressed biogas plants (Bio-CNG) feature in Union Budget 2014-15 (Refer to para 219 and 233 of the Budget Speech available at This incentive coupled with Swachh Bharat Abhiyan” or "Clean India Mission" (Refer to para 30 of the Budget Speech) which is intended to provide sanitation facility to every household by 2019, presents a wonderful entrepreneurship opportunity for sanitation based bio-gas plants especially in rural areas. Before time runs out, associations of Indian bio-gas entrepreneurs must make representations to the Central Government to the effect that this sanitation mission is monitored through a high-level committee also consisting of bio-gas enterpreneurs' representatives. This mechanism will do away with the possibility of haphazard planning and will ensure adequate provisioning for rural sanitation based bio-gas plants. Link to an Indian experiment
